Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include wrist joint pain, numbness of the fingers, weakness in the hands and inability to use strength to hold things.
The cause of this disease is mostly due to frequent wrist-twisting during work, which leads to overstress the joint. For example, typing on the computer keyboard for a long time, using the mouse, and lifting heavy object. These actions may cause overstress the wrist ligament, resulting in narrowing of the carpal tunnel, compressing on the median nerve and causing hand numbness and muscle contraction of the thumb, index and middle fingers. The ligaments, muscles, and joints of the wrist are inflamed, causing swelling and pain in the wrist. The patient is usually awakened by a numbness of the fingers at night or early in the morning. The pain in the wrist seems to be a burning sensation, and would often not be able to hold things firmly.
Diagnose
Because the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are very similar to the symptoms of cervical nerve compression, it is necessary to find the root cause in order to treat the condition. The chiropractor will first check the wrist of the median nerves in the wrist and the cervical spine, and then test the mobility of the hand and wrist muscles and joints to determine whether the finger numbness comes from the cervical spine or the wrist. Sometimes patients will have problems in both parts at the same time, resulting in double effects that causes numbness in the neck, upper back, hands, and fingers.
Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Chiropractors will use ultrasound and electrotherapy to relieve swelling and pain in the wrist. Then adjust the joint of the wrist, and finally exercises the tendon of the wrist to manage the patient’s symptoms.
Prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
– Avoid long term “wrist twisting” actions
– If you want to use the keyboard frequently, a keyboard cushion should be placed under the keyboard to support the wrist, best leave fifteen to twenty minutes to rest.
-Do some wrist exercises to increase wrist muscle tension and strengthen ligament tension.

– If the patient’s condition is very serious, a wrist brace can be worn to stable the position of the wrist during work and at sleep.
